Two Together was a solo exhibition at GR2 in 2016.
Chao created a body of works based on the idea of a lasting friendship of two.
They were created in the loving memory of his dog pal Nunu (2001-2016)
The title Two Together is also inspired by a poem, “Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking”, written by Walt Whitman.
The poem may be taken as an elegy mourning the death of someone dear to Whitman. The basic theme of the poem is the relationship between suffering and art. It shows how a boy matures into a poet through his experience of love and death. The sentiment of the poem resonated with Chao’s grief and inspired the works.
“…
Two together!
Winds blow south, or winds blow north,
Day come white, or night come black,
Home, or rivers and mountains from home,
Singing all time, minding no time,
While we two keep together
…
0 past! 0 happy life! 0 songs of joy!
In the air, in the woods, over fields,
Loved! loved! loved! loved! loved!
But my mate no more, no more with me!
We two together no more.
